One of the most significant opportunities that Kumar turned down in his career was the chance to star in Lawrence of Arabia (1962), a historical epic film directed by the acclaimed British filmmaker David Lean. Kumar was offered the role of \"Sherif Ali\", a charismatic Arab leader who allies with the British officer T.E. Lawrence during World War I. However, Kumar declined the offer, citing his lack of interest in international projects and his loyalty to the Indian film industry.[42] The role was then given to Omar Sharif, an actor from Egypt who became an international star after his performance in the film. Kumar later praised Sharif's portrayal of Sherif Ali and admitted in his autobiography that he felt Sharif had done a much better job than he could have ever done.[43] Kumar also missed another opportunity to work with Lean, who was planning to cast him opposite Elizabeth Taylor in a film based on the love story of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, the builders of the Taj Mahal. However, the project was eventually cancelled due to various reasons.[44]

Kumar's decision to reject Lawrence of Arabia was not the only time he turned down a role in a Hollywood film. He was also approached by David O. Selznick, the producer of Gone with the Wind (1939), who wanted to cast him in a film set in India. Kumar refused the offer, saying that he was not comfortable speaking in English and that he did not want to leave his country for a long period of time.[45] He also declined an offer from Cecil B. DeMille, the director of The Ten Commandments (1956), who wanted him to play a Hindu king in one of his films.[46]
Despite his reluctance to work in Hollywood, Kumar was highly respected and admired by many international filmmakers and actors. He received praise from directors such as Satyajit Ray, FranÃois Truffaut, Elia Kazan, and Martin Scorsese, who considered him one of the greatest actors of all time.[47] He also had a fan following among actors such as Marlon Brando, Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Leonardo DiCaprio, who were influenced by his style and technique of acting.[48] Kumar was honored with many awards and recognitions for his contributions to cinema, both in India and abroad. He received the Padma Shri, the Padma Bhushan, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and the Bharat Ratna from the Government of India, as well as the Legion of Honour from the Government of France.[49] 0efd9a6b88
